Early Autumn in your Garden

As we pass through the season of mellow fruitfulness, the Autumn garden jobs beckon. And there's lots to do in the garden.

With all of this rain and warmth, the lawn will still need to be mown. It's the time to aerate and scarify your lawn- and to ensure that the falling autumn leaves don't smother it.

The pond definitely needs a tidy to remove foliage that has seen better days, and to clear out excess duckweed and other aerating plants. I'm watching the oak tree so that I can cover my pond with netting while the leaves fall.

The fallen leaves will turn into a lovely mulch after they've been stored for a couple of years- either in a separate compost heap, or in pierced black bags. One of the best ways to gather the leaves from the lawn is with a rotary mower- it breaks down the leaves so that they are mulch-ready more quickly

The herbaceous border is still flowering, but I'll be checking for plants that have had enough for this year. Some of them will look good for months to come. Some I can divide and replant. Most of them will die back completely until next year.

The roses are still blooming. I'll continue the deadheading. I won't prune them until later in the winter- though I might do some tidying up to the climbing roses.

This is the time to trim and tidy deciduous hedges and most shrubs so that they are neat and shapely though the winter months.

There's lots more- especially if you have tender plants that need lifting. And of course, there's all the planting for the spring- more later!
